Wooden folding screen - Mackintosh inspired - Art Nouveau style - Glasgow Style - two women on each side of the panel with Mackintosh style roses in shades of purple-lilac and white
Ode to Mackintosh was born from a visit to The Hill House in Helensburgh, where I became fascinated by the recurring language of roses and female figures that runs through the interiors and the work of Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh.

Those impressions stayed with me. In this Art Screen, the rose is transformed and repeated, opening into almost eye-like forms that appear to watch from within the composition. Two women standing at either side, their closed eyes and still expressions giving them an almost otherworldly presence. The women could be guardians, dreamers or figures belonging to another world; their story is deliberately left untold.
Ode to Mackintosh is my response to what I experienced at The Hill House, not an attempt to recreate its imagery, but to take the roses, female forms and atmosphere that remained in my mind after my visit and allow them to evolve through my own imagination into something new.
