Decorative wooden room divider with painted illustrations of a woman with curly hair, surrounded by floral and heart motifs.
Ode to Wassail takes its inspiration from Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s The Wassail, reimagining it through my own artistic language.

The stylised motifs on the outer panels originate from forms found within The Wassail. In my imagination, however, they became lanterns — glowing, suspended forms that brought to mind the magical light of the lanterns in John Singer Sargent’s Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose. In this way, two very different works became quietly entwined within my own.
At the centre, two mirrored female figures emerges with elongated lines and repeated forms. They appear almost dreamlike, as though inhabiting a place in an imagined world. Around them, the lantern-like shapes bring warmth and light.
Ode to Wassail is a conversation; taking a form from Mackintosh, seeing something unexpected within it, and allowing that thought to lead to Sargent and ultimately to a new story of my own.
